Ecofriendly & Sustainable Candle Making

Producing quality candles has become very important to me not least providing my customers with  value for money but  my obvious love of wildlife and to protect the environment in which we all live.

Did you know that some candles you can buy contain paraffin based wax?  When you think about it, as the candle burns it releases paraffin into the air that we breathe, It can also cause excess sooting, sometimes leaving black staining on walls and ceilings.

All candles and wax melts at Hotch-Witchi Candle house are made from a soy wax, this is a natural product and therefore it is much cleaner and less toxic when it burns. It is a sustainable agricultural crop  and supports local economies. Candles are poured during daylight and any electric required in melting the wax is is provided from my home solar panels and batteries.

In order to further reduce any more toxins being  produced when burning the candles I have opted to use cotton wicks in my products and although the fragrances are not completely natural they are  vegan-friendly, cruelty and paraben free.

Sustainable Packaging & Labeling

Here at Hotchi-Witchi Candle House  products are packaged and labelled  with Kraft paper or paperboard. Kraft is  light, strong and durable so it will help protect the product inside, especially important if travelling through the post. It is produced in the UK and it can look a little rustic but its simple and primitive look does have a timeless appeal and I think it entirely suits my hand poured goods. Kraft is entirely environmentally friendly, the boxes can either be reused or recycled. It degrades naturally in as little as a few weeks minimising any waste. It is  possible that the Kraft paper itself is made from recycled kraft paperboard.

The labels on the glass jars and the wax melt packaging is made from glassine. This 100 % paper and is either recyclable, compostable, biodegradable and is also made in the UK. Although these can be composted, I recommend recycling the glassine bags so the fibres can be used again to make new paper!

Candle Containers - Tin

In an effort to be more environmentally responsible I have made some bold choices in terms of the candle jars I use. The tin container candle is fabulous as a travel candle and has a smaller melt pool which will suit a smaller room but I have also included a wild flower infused gift tag which I have made from recycled paper.

Once you have finished burning your candle, gently clean out the tin, drill several holes in the bottom of the tin, fill the tin with some soild from the garden and plant the gift tag in the tin, water it and watch the seeds grow. You can even use the lid as a saucer. If you dont want to use the tin for this you could reuse it for something else such as storage, perhaps paper clips or drawing pins for example or just pop it in the recycling bin.

Candle Container - Amber Glass Jar

The amber glass jar is beautiful as well as robust however I do not recommend reusing the jar to make another candle or to burn tealights. This is because the glass has a heat tolerance limit. Although this is satisfactory for the initial burn, the glass jar may not tolerate successive burns and might crack or shatter as a result. More importantly you might be harmed.

Once you have finished burning your candle, gently but thoroughly wash out your jar and you could repurpose it. Together with the quality wooden lid these jars are ideal for storing items in such as hair accessories, paper clips or keys. Or perhaps use the jar as a flower vase or to plant a succulent or air plant.

* I can't reuse candle jars but I can reuse lids for the amber jars. So if you want to return lids, as long as they are in pristine condition I will give you 10 % off your next purchase .
